Tottenham supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their side suffer a second Premier League home defeat of the season against champions Manchester City on Saturday.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their encounter with the North West outfit off the back of a six-match winning streak in the league, a run which has all but sealed their place in the top four. Yet they weren’t able to get the better of the Citizens on Saturday as goals from Gabriel Jesus, Ilkay Gundogan, and Raheem Sterling sealed all three points for Pep Guardiola’s side, with Christian Eriksen’s effort just before half time giving the hosts hope, but ultimately not enough to spark a comeback against the newly-crowned league champions.
Subsequently, there have been many despondent Tottenham fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are already forgetting about Saturday’s defeat and instead focusing on their side’s trip to Brighton on Tuesday.
And several of our resident Spurs supporters are discussing what, if any, changes Pochettino should make to his starting eleven, with many of the opinion that £25.2 million-rated ace Lucas Moura (as per Transfermarkt) should get the nod ahead of Erik Lamela.
Ultimately, while Lamela remains on the road back to full fitness following a year out with a hip problem, the 26-year-old has failed to register a goal or an assist in any of his last seven Premier League appearances for Spurs – in fact, he hasn’t bagged at all in the league since his return from injury back in November.
Yes, the Argentina international has carried a threat more often than not, but he was well below his best against City on Saturday, and was duly replaced by Son Heung-min.
But it was Lucas’ 17-minute cameo which lit up Wembley on Saturday evening, as the Brazil international showed with his pace and directness everything that Lamela struggled to throughout his hour on the pitch.
The 25-year-old has still yet to start a Premier League game for Spurs since his arrival from Paris Saint-Germain in January, but he certainly looked a class act on Saturday in trying to take defenders on and very much making life uncomfortable for the City backline in the dying stages.
And against a Brighton side likely to be low on confidence having lost three of their last four matches, he could be the difference for Pochettino as his side go in search of another win which will take them closer to Champions League football.
As such, the Argentine must seek to axe his compatriot Lamela and replace him with 25-year-old Lucas against Chris Hughton’s Seagulls on Tuesday.
