Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating their side’s trip to Premier League champions Chelsea on Sunday knowing that victory would move them eight points clear of the Blues in the race for Champions League qualification.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men sit fourth in the division having won 18 of their 30 league matches this season, and they currently hold a five-point advantage over the West London outfit with just eight games of the campaign remaining. And with an FA Cup semi-final to come against Manchester United next month, there are some potentially exciting times ahead for our resident Spurs fans, and victory over Antonio Conte’s Chelsea on Sunday would put them firmly on course for a third successive top four finish.
Subsequently, there are many happy Tottenham fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are confident about their side’s chances at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, what with their team unbeaten in their last 12 Premier League games, winning their last four.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Spurs supporters to discuss, not least recent reports linking them with a mega money move for Sporting midfielder Bruno Fernandes.
And were the North London outfit to indeed seal a deal for the 23-year-old this summer, it could spell seriously bad news for £18 million-rated Spurs star Moussa Sissoko (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, the 28-year-old has endured a tough time since his move to Tottenham back in 2016, with the France international mustering just 25 Premier League appearances for Pochettino’s side last season, of which 17 came from the substitute’s bench.
And while he has commanded more regular football in the league this time round, the midfielder still remains down the pecking order at the North London outfit, with the likes of Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama comfortably ahead of him in the deeper central role, while Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-min, Erik Lamela, and Lucas Moura are often preferred in the attacking positions.
Add in Eric Dier and Harry Winks, and even now Sissoko is struggling to be a regular feature in Pochettino’s starting eleven, so adding another midfielder in the form of Fernandes is only going to restrict his chances even further.
Arguably, the 28-year-old has actually been slightly better for Spurs when called upon this season, but he is still a way away from regularly turning out for the North London club, and with Pochettino’s men eyeing up major trophies both domestically and in Europe in years to come, he simply isn’t the calibre of player they need.
Thus, Fernandes’ potential arrival in the summer could further spell bad news for the former Newcastle man – signing the 23-year-old would surely all but end Sissoko’s time in North London.
