Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating their side’s FA Cup semi-final clash with Manchester United at Wembley on Saturday, as Spurs seek to reach the showpiece final for the first time since 1991.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men eased past AFC Wimbledon in round three yet needed replays against both Newport County and Rochdale in the succeeding rounds, thus earning them a quarter-final clash with fellow Premier League side Swansea City. And the North London outfit produced their best performance of the competition at the Liberty Stadium in the last round, comfortably dispatching of the Swans 3-0 to book their place in the last four, where they face Jose Mourinho’s United on Saturday.
As such, several of our resident Tottenham fans are sincerely hoping that their side can finally end a decade-long wait for silverware by going on to win the FA Cup this year, a competition they haven’t won since beating Nottingham Forest in the final back in 1991.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that their club are eyeing Andre Gomes as a possible replacement for Mousa Dembele, who they could cash in on this summer.
And while Gomes’ arrival would likely be well received by Tottenham fans, landing the 24-year-old could well force £13.5 million-rated star Harry Winks (as per Transfermarkt) out of the North London outfit.
Ultimately, the 22-year-old has endured a testing year at Spurs with just nine Premier League starts to show for his endeavours this season – this all despite making his England debut and indeed impressing on it back in October against Lithuania.
At the time, the midfielder was being tipped by many to make Gareth Southgate’s 23-man squad for this summer’s World Cup, but a lack of form and injury troubles have all but ended his hopes, with Winks now focusing firmly on returning to the Tottenham fold.
But, despite Dembele potentially leaving the club this summer, he might find it difficult to do just that, what with Eric Dier, Victor Wanyama, and possibly even Moussa Sissoko ahead of him in the pecking order, let alone were they to land Gomes this summer.
As such, things could get particularly difficult for Winks were Pochettino to opt to replace Dembele with Gomes this summer, and given he is 22 and ideally in need of first team football to better his prospects for both club and country, the midfielder may seek to make a move this summer.
So while Gomes’ arrival would almost certainly be met with delight from Tottenham fans, landing him this summer could spell bad news for Winks, who could in turn look to make his way out of the North London club during the close season.
