Landing this £22.5m-rated ace this summer may be needed to keep Pochettino at Tottenham

Tottenham supporters have been very downbeat in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their team bow out of the FA Cup at the semi-final stage for the second successive season courtesy of a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their meeting with the North West giants having got past AFC Wimbledon, Newport County, Rochdale, and Swansea City in the world’s oldest club competition, thus earning them a semi-final spot for the second year in a row. But for the second time in 12 months, the North Londoners were unable to reach the showpiece despite taking the lead on Saturday through Dele Alli, with goals from Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera securing victory for Jose Mourinho’s side, thus earning them a spot in the showpiece event against Chelsea next month.

As such, there have been many despondent and frustrated Spurs fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hugely disappointed to see their team’s wait for some silverware head into another season.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Tottenham fans to discuss, not least recent reports suggesting that Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha is ‘near the top of this summer’s wishlist’.

And following hints from manager Pochettino that he could indeed leave the club in the near future, landing the £22.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) may be needed to keep the Argentine in North London beyond the summer.

Ultimately, the 25-year-old Palace forward has again proven his Premier League credentials this season with seven goals and four assists for Roy Hodgson’s men, numbers that are likely to play a key part in keeping the Eagles in the top-flight.

And after netting seven goals and laying on 11 assists to help Sam Allardyce’s side survive in the top tier last term, it’s clear that the Ivory Coast international is a hugely influential figure at Selhurst Park, and indeed one of the best attackers outside of the top six clubs in the Premier League.

As such, there’s little doubting that Zaha’s arrival would significantly bolster Spurs’ attacking ranks, and he may well have helped them on Saturday against United in the second half given Pochettino’s side looked bereft of ideas in how to break down Mourinho’s side.

More importantly though, landing Zaha this summer, a player who has reportedly been on Pochettino’s radar for some time now, would show genuine ambition from the Tottenham hierarchy, the sort of ambition which may convince the Argentine to remain at the club.

Ultimately, Spurs will endure another trophyless campaign this time round, with questions again to be asked of their big-game capabilities after again falling short in the semi-final of the FA Cup – this all after blowing a healthy advantage to lose to Juventus in the Champions League.

Pochettino after the game on Saturday spoke of his pride that his team ‘competed’ with United, and while that should be admired, it appears to be a clear statement that more money and further strengthening is needed to beat the likes of United and Manchester City to the big titles.

And with Zaha reportedly being near the top of the wishlist this summer, and Pochettino having reportedly kept tabs on him for a while now, landing the 25-year-old would show that ambition to compete and beat the top sides.

And that may well be enough to convince Pochettino to remain at the club beyond the summer.
