Toby Alderweireld has preferred not to discuss his future plans in public and there has been little indication as to where his future truly lies despite again being linked with a move to Manchester United.

The Belgian is out of contract at Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the season and he has not yet been offered a new contract by Daniel Levy to remain at the club.

But come the January transfer window then Alderweireld's future would become a trending topic once again with clubs eyeing potential moves for him.

Should it be confirmed in the near future that the 29-year-old will be playing his football at a different club from next season onward, then Levy should negotiate a deal with Everton for the signing of Michael Keane.

The Toffees will however not be easily trapped into letting go of someone as consistent as Keane, but from Spurs' perspective, he would be an excellent addition in the place of Alderweireld.

Keane has been in terrific form under new manager Marco Silva and has looked strong on defence, which earned him a recall to Gareth Southgate's England team in recent weeks.

The 25-year-old is under contract at Goodison Park until 2022 but pressure from the North London club could eventually lead to Everton selling him if a good offer is made.

Apart from suffering a head injury at the end of August, Keane has started and completed every other match for the Toffees so far this season. He was particularly impressive in the club's draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last weekend which saw him play next to new signing Yerry Mina for the first time.

But Keane could form an even more formidable partnership with Jan Vertonghen at Spurs and would they make an excellent centre-back pairing for Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs could be set for a massive campaign next season when they've moved into their new stadium and the club are surely expected to have made at least a few signings by then. Having Keane as one of those signings though will certainly put Pochettino's men in a position to finally make a proper challenge for the title.
