Tottenham were handed their first defeat on the season by Watford heading into the international break.

Spurs had won their opening three fixtures in the Premier League but couldn’t get past the Hornets who have made an exceptional start to the new campaign. Mauricio Pochettino will be overjoyed to see Heung-Min Son return the club with the news that he will not have to serve military service for South Korea. The Argentine will be hoping he can play a key role against top of the table Liverpool following the international fixtures.

Pochettino made history in the transfer window with Tottenham becoming the first side since 2003 to not sign a single player. The decision was unpopular amongst many Spurs fans, but their excellent start to the campaign has quickly eased fears. However, the Lilywhites may be forced into the market if Manchester United return to sign Toby Alderweireld who will have just six months on his contract in January.

To replace him, Tottenham should do everything in their power to sign Inter Milan defender – Milan Skriniar. Valued at £40.5m by Transfermarkt, the Slovakia international has quickly emerged as one of the finest defenders in world football following an exceptional debut season at the San Siro. After joining from Sampdoria last summer, Skriniar played every single minute of football in the Serie A for his new side.

The 23-year-old would slot seamlessly into Tottenham’s defence alongside Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen. Skriniar is excellent on the ball meaning he fits perfectly into Pochettino’s system; he completed 93% of his passes in the Italian league last season. Not only is the defender great on the ball, but he is also a fantastic tackler – he averaged 2.3 tackles per game last season – more than any other Tottenham centre-back (WhoScored).

He wouldn’t be cheap, but Tottenham will have funds to play with after a quiet summer. If Pochettino can lure Skriniar to North London, fans will forget about Alderweireld in a heartbeat.

Tottenham fans, thoughts?
