Oh Andy Carroll, what has happened to the next Alan Shearer?
The Liverpool number 9 has struggled to settle into a style that doesn’t really suit him this season and looks more like a flop everytime he plays.
Well the Daily Mirror claim Liverpool are ready to cut their losses and move on the number 9 who has hardly filled the boots of Robbie Fowler and Fernando Torres. Liverpool are ready to accept a cut price deal for the failing forward but the question is, who would take him? Who thought we’d be asking that when he was banging in the goals while wearing Newcastle’s famous number 9 and getting his first England call up?
There will be takers for him, provided the price is cut enough – ironically, probably a Sports Direct type deal, 70% off – and here are 3 clubs in the Premier League who’s style may be a little more suited to the big man.
Tottenham
Now steady on Spurs fans, I know some of you will be thinking of title challenges in the future and Carroll doesn’t really fill anyone with confidence. My reasoning is simple, Harry Redknapp. If Redknapp remains at Spurs next season he will be in the market for a new forward, as Adebayor’s wages seem to be a stumbling block for any deal there, Carroll may well be a viable option. Redknapp has a fantastic record of getting the best out of unknown or failing players and Carroll certainly fits that bill.
An offer of say £8-10m may tempt Liverpool and I’m sure Carroll would be willing to take a wage cut to end his Anfield nightmare, if Redknapp could get the Newcastle Andy Carroll back this could just be a deal well worth it.
Stoke City
Although already housing Peter Crouch who has been superb this season, Andy Carroll certainly fits Stoke’s style of play. Kenwyne Jones may well leave Stoke this season which would pave the way for Carroll’s arrival.
Many ex-team-mates of Carroll have stated Liverpool aren’t playing to his strengths like Newcastle was, his strengths obviously being aerial threat meaning he needs a club who will put in alot of crosses and play to his obvious advantages over defenders, Stoke City’s style is certainly fitting of this and if they could match the transfer fee recieved for Jones then this could be a punt worth taking.
Aston Villa
Obviously based on whether Alex McLeish is still in charge, but provided he is, Carroll certainly fits McLeish’s long ball tactics. Darren Bent’s hold up play is not the best and he would surely like to work off Andy Carroll’s flick ons and with Albrighton – who will surely be more prominant next season – and Agbonlahor Villa certainly have players capable of providing Carroll the crossing ammunition he requires.
Depending on Liverpool’s valuation and Carroll’s wage demands I think Liverpool will find some takers for the England forward, but after paying £35m and reaping no rewards this will surely go down in history as one of the worse transfers in history.
