Spurs patrons in the Transfer Tavern are fretting over news that Toby Alderweireld doesn’t want to sign a new contract at White Hart Lane.
Tottenham Hotspur acquired the Belgium international two summers ago after impressing during a season-long loan at Southampton and he’s gone on to establish himself as a crucial part of their starting XI.
Indeed, operating in a back three and a back four, Alderweireld is on course to help Tottenham finish up with the best goals conceded record in the Premier League for a second season in a row.
According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, who works for Sky Italy, however, the 28-year-old has already told the club that he doesn’t want to sign a new contract – although his current terms aren’t due to expire until 2020.
That gives Spurs three years to either change the former Atletico Madrid defender’s mind or sell him on, likely for a substantial profit on their original investment.
The Tavern’s Tottenham patrons aren’t hitting the panic button just yet, but they fear this could be an early sign of Alderweireld’s ambitions to leave the club.
