Pochettino done: Now Tottenham must follow it up with deal for exciting £58.5m-rated ace

Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to the wonderful news that manager Mauricio Pochettino has penned a new long-term deal with the club, keeping him in North London until 2023.

The ex-Southampton chief took over at Spurs back in 2014 and has since transformed them into one of the best teams in the country, with this season their third in a row in which they have finished in the Premier League’s top four. Yes, the Argentine has yet to end their long wait for some silverware, but there’s no doubt that Tottenham are improving under his stewardship, and hopes will be high that they can go on next term and finally left a trophy.

As such, there are many optimistic Spurs supporters in the Tavern at present, several of whom are hoping that their side follow up the news of Pochettino’s new contract with a summer deal for exciting £58.5 million-rated ace Anthony Martial (as per Transfermarkt).

The North Londoners have been linked with a move for the Manchester United star in recent times given the Frenchman’s struggles for regular first team football this season, with the forward managing just 26 starts in all competitions for the Red Devils.

And with reports in recent months suggesting that the France international wants to leave Old Trafford this summer, it’s clear that all is not well for Martial in the North West, and as such a move away could be in his best interests.

And Spurs are one side eyeing a deal for the 22-year-old, one they simply have to get done this summer to move to the next level next time round.

Yes, Martial hasn’t enjoyed the best of seasons this term, but he still finished the campaign with 11 goals and nine assists in all competitions, which isn’t a bad return at all given his lowly amount of minutes on the pitch.

And his first season in English football back in 2015/16, in which he netted 17 times and laid on nine assists, underlines what an exciting asset he could be to Pochettino’s side going forward, at the same time offering them something slightly different in the attacking third of the pitch.

At times this season, Spurs have been crying out for someone to use their pace and trickery to take defenders on, not least in the big games in which they have sometimes had difficulty unlocking the opposition backline (against United in the FA Cup semi-finals for instance).

And when Martial is at his confident best, he would do exactly that, and where better to get back to that high level than under Pochettino at Tottenham, whose track record of improving players and backing them is second to none.

Add in the fact that a deal for the 22-year-old would be a huge statement of intent from chairman Daniel Levy and the club’s hierarchy ahead of the new season, and it’s one they simply have to get done over the summer to enhance their silverware prospects.

Thus, with a deal done for Pochettino, Tottenham must now follow that up with another important deal, namely bringing Martial to North London.
