Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been rejoicing at the news that manager Mauricio Pochettino has penned a new long-term deal with the North London club.
The Argentine took over back in 2014 and has since transformed Spurs into regular top four contenders, with his side having achieved the feat of finishing in the Champions League places in each of the last three seasons. And while he has yet to deliver a trophy, and thus end their long silverware drought, there is much optimism among our resident Tottenham fans that he can be the man to take the club forward once again in the coming years to compete for major honours both domestically and in Europe.
As such, there have been many thrilled Spurs supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are now hoping that, with Pochettino’s deal done, chairman Daniel Levy can now seal an agreement with £16.2 million-rated ace Mousa Dembele (as per Transfermarkt) regarding his future.
The 30-year-old sees his current deal at the club expire in the 12 months’ time and there has been lots of speculation regarding a possible move away this summer, although based on his hugely influential displays in the heart of Pochettino’s midfield, the North Londoners simply must seek to pen him down to a new deal.
Ultimately, the Belgium international is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, with Dembele having proven his worth pretty much ever since he made the move to Spurs from Fulham back in 2012.
Be it breaking up play and providing protection to the Tottenham backline, or indeed his ability to get on the ball to move forward and launch attacks, the 30-year-old has everything required of a modern-day central midfielder – he and Victor Wanyama struck up a sensational partnership in their run to second place last season.
And his incredible capabilities were evidenced most by his man-of-the-match display in Spurs’ 2-2 draw with Juventus in the Champions League back in February, with Dembele running the show to remind us all of his ability, and indeed to remind Tottenham fans why they need to keep him beyond the summer.
Yes, there are concerns among some of our resident Spurs supporters given he has suffered injury problems recently and will turn 31 in July, but performances like the one in Turin, amongst many others, aren’t replicable by many other players in the division – ultimately, Dembele is one of a kind.
And if Spurs are serious about challenging for major trophies next season, and indeed the campaigns after that, not only do they need to make signings this summer, but they also have to retain their most influential stars – Dembele is without doubt one of those.
Thus, with Pochettino’s future sorted, Levy and the club’s hierarchy must now set about securing an agreement with Dembele over his future at the North London outfit.
