It’s not been the most exciting summer thus far for the Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern as the new Premier League campaign edges ever closer.
Indeed, Mauricio Pochettino is yet to add to the squad that finished second to Chelsea last season and takes his side up to Newcastle United in under a week, much to the frustration of our local Lillywhites.
Kyle Walker has been sold to Manchester City, leaving the side somewhat weaker and, while many of our north London locals back Kieran Trippier over the £50m export, the latter’s injury has concerned the punters propping up our bar.
The England international limped off against Juventus during Spurs’ final pre-season game, leaving our local Spurs-mad punters fretting over the right-back position ahead of their trip to St. James’ Park.
Only the young -albeit impressive – Kyle Walker-Peters remains as an orthodox right-back, so reports from the Daily Mail have gone down a storm today. They claim Pochettino is keen on making a move for Valencia full-back Joao Cancelo and has reportedly emerged as a major rival to Juventus over the 23-year-old.
Even if Trippier can make the Newcastle game, there’d be no harm in Tottenham moving for a player of Cancelo’s quality.
If Spurs really are going to mount a genuine title tilt, as well as improve in the Champions League, they need a big squad and landing the 23-year-old (as well as banking £25m for Walker) would be great business heading into the new campaign.
