Potential consequences: Tottenham swoop for Wilmar Barrios

It’s fair to say that already it seems Tottenham are paying the consequences for not signing a single player in the summer.

Spurs compared to their title rivals hadn’t spent a penny whilst others had spent north of £100 million to make squad improvements.

Their form has improved in recent games but whilst they’re getting results, so are the rivals that are already ahead of them.

To improve their chances, they must invest in some quality players in the January transfer window, as reports are suggesting they will.

Argentine journalist Luis Fregossi was seen saying on Twitter that Tottenham are close to agreeing a deal to sign Boca Juniors midfielder Wilmar Barrios.

The no-nonsense midfielder was a target for Tottenham over the summer after watching him for Columbia at the World Cup.

Barrios will have to adapt to the Premier League but could become a real star for Spurs, what would it mean for the rest of the squad though…

Eric Dier dropped for Wilmar Barrios

Dier has been one of Tottenham’s most inconsistent players during his time at the club but recently his performances have been solid and he has been a key part in everything good they’ve done.

Despite this, 24-year-old Barrios could have what it takes to be a better and more useful player for Tottenham. Whilst some claim he could struggle, others believe the Colombian is a powerhouse that Tottenham need and should sign to improve their defensive midfield role.

Squad depth improves

Whatever happens, Tottenham have more solid players to turn to for each individual game. Squad depth is arguably one of the most important things for a Premier League team to have and with Wilmar Barrios plus a few more January arrivals, Spurs could have that in abundance.
