Tottenham supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team narrowly edge North London rivals Arsenal 1-0 at Wembley on Saturday to move seven points clear of the Gunners in the Premier League table.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their clash with Arsene Wenger’s side having won five and drawing the other three of their previous eight league games, which included a 2-0 success over Manchester United as well as a 2-2 draw at Liverpool in their preceding two clashes. And Spurs have the bragging rights in North London for the foreseeable future as Harry Kane’s header four minutes into the second half was enough to edge past Arsenal at the national stadium on Saturday, thus moving Pochettino’s side seven points clear of the Gunners in the race for a top four finish.
Consequently, there have been many delighted Tottenham fans in the Tavern in recent times, and they are likely to be intrigued and perhaps surprised by a recent report from The Daily Telegraph, which suggests that defender Toby Alderweireld will not be making the trip with the squad for their Champions League encounter with Juventus on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old spent a lengthy time on the sidelines after sustaining a hamstring issue against European champions Real Madrid back in November, only returning to the first team for their FA Cup replay victory over Newport County last week.
And although he played the full 90 minutes and seemingly came through unscathed, the Belgium international was left out of Pochettino’s squad for the visit of Arsenal on Saturday, and recent reports suggest that he won’t be traveling with the team to Turin for their last-16 first leg clash with Juve on Tuesday night.
And given how influential Alderweireld has been for Spurs in the last few years, arguably becoming one of the Premier League’s best centre-backs under Pochettino’s guidance, this is likely to come as a surprise to our resident Tottenham supporters ahead of Tuesday’s huge clash against the Serie A champions.
Landlord’s verdict: Toby Alderweireld made his return to first team action with 90 minutes against Newport County in the FA Cup last week, but was surprisingly omitted from Mauricio Pochettino’s squad for the visit of Arsenal on Saturday.
And the 28-year-old is reportedly not set to travel with the Spurs squad for the trip to Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday night, with the centre-back reportedly set to work further on his fitness ahead of the run in.
Nonetheless, given the Belgium international’s status as one of the best defenders in the Premier League, this news is likely to come as a surprise to our resident Spurs fans, and is also likely to create further speculation surrounding Alderweireld’s future at the club, what with negotiations over a new deal so far resulting in nothing.
Thus, only time will tell whether his ongoing contract situation is another motivation for Pochettino’s decision to leave him in England.
Tottenham fans… what do you make of the news? Let us know!
