PSG Sessegnon interest should turn Tottenham’s attentions towards £4.5m-rated sensation

Tottenham supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team clinch a Premier League top four spot courtesy of a hard-fought 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Wednesday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their meeting with the North East heavyweights just two points ahead of fifth place Chelsea with two matches of the campaign remaining, and thus in need of all three points to tighten their grip on a Champions League qualification place. And three points they got at Wembley on Wednesday thanks to Harry Kane’s second half strike, and coupled with Chelsea only mustering a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town the same night, the victory was enough to mathematically secure Spurs’ place in the top four.

Subsequently, there have been many delighted Tottenham fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are eagerly anticipating a third successive season of Champions League football, with the hope that their side can exceed this term’s last-16 finish in the competition.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Paris Saint-Germain have joined the race for Fulham wonderkid Ryan Sessegnon.

And the French giants’ interest in the 17-year-old left back should turn Spurs’ summer attentions towards £4.5 million-rated Kieran Tierney (as per Transfermarkt).

Ultimately, the financial muscle the Ligue 1 champions have is going to make life very difficult for Pochettino and the Tottenham hierarchy to lure Sessegnon to North London, and as such they simply have to have plans in place in case they cannot indeed sign the Cottagers starlet.

As such, Celtic’s Tierney is the man they should go after in case they are unsuccessful with the Sessegnon pursuit, as the Scotland international has certainly proven his worth to the Bhoys in the last few years.

Despite being at the tender age of 20, the left back already has 128 senior appearances for Brendan Rodgers’ side under his belt, 53 of which coming this term in their run to the Scottish Premiership and Scottish League Cup crowns, and indeed the final of the Scottish Cup.

Significantly though, Tierney has proven his big-game capabilities in the last few years with several impressive performances in the Champions League, not least last season when they drew 3-3 with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at Parkhead, from which the Citizens reportedly expressed an interest in the defender.

And with a huge amount of potential to go with his immense amount of talent, the sky is the limit for the 20-year-old, and a move to Tottenham to work under Pochettino could be exactly what he needs to go on and become the top-quality left back his potential suggests he can be.

Ultimately, the likes of Ben Davies and Danny Rose have improved immeasurably down that left-hand-side under Pochettino’s guidance – the former in wrestling control of the left back situation this term, the latter to reinvigorate his career at both club and international level.

Add in the development of the likes of Kane, Dele Alli, and Eric Dier, and Pochettino knows exactly how to aid young players in becoming the best they can possibly be. And with the ingredients already there for Tierney, he could go on to become a world beater.

Yes, Sessegnon is extremely talented and, like Tierney, destined for great things, but were they unable to land the former at the expense of big-spending PSG, the latter is an extremely viable alternative for both the short term, and indeed the long term.

Thus, PSG’s interest in 17-year-old Sessegnon should turn Tottenham’s summer attentions towards sealing a deal for the supremely talented Tierney.
