Speaking to ESPNFC and as quoted by Squawka, Craig Burley has admitted he is happy to see Tottenham being knocked out of the Champions League this season, stirring the pot between our Chelsea and Spurs fans here in the Transfer Tavern,
Our resident Lilywhites fans didn’t think they could get much lower after losing to Monaco thanks to an abject display that saw them limp out of the elite continental competition last night but Burley sticking his oar in has only made things worse.
In truth, the Tottenham lot here by the bar know they deserved to go out but that doesn’t make it any easier, with the Scotsman saying that Mauricio Pochettino’s selection meant they had it coming.
“I’m glad they’re out. Resting players in a game you have to win in France?” said the former Chelsea man.
”Monaco have beaten them in match day one at Wembley, he [Pochettino] knew Leverkusen had picked a point up because that was an early game in Moscow, and he still fielded a weakened team – OK, it wasn’t a poor team but it was a weakened team and they got totally outplayed.
”They have been a shambles in this competition, and I’m glad they’re out. I know players get rested for the FA Cup these days, but he’s now resting players for the Champions League because he’s playing Chelsea at the weekend. What a joke that is.”
Strong words indeed and that’s certainly not gone unnoticed by our Spurs fans who were quick to respond with a reminder to the Chelsea fans here that at least they made it to Europe this season.
The Blues fans, though, don’t seem to care much with them being top of the league and will look to retain that position at the expense of Spurs this weekend.
The pair face each other at Stamford Bridge in a game that is likely to be a very hotly contested affair, considering the nature of their rivalry over the years.
Now, the usually rather cocky Spurs fans in the Tavern are somewhat concerned as Chelsea top the Premier League table.
