Tottenham supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side’s bid for a first trophy since 2008 come to an end at the hands of Manchester United in the semi-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their clash with the Red Devils having got past AFC Wimbledon, Newport County, Rochdale, and Swansea City to reach the last four of the world’s oldest club competition, which they haven’t won since 1991. And their wait for silverware will go on into another season despite taking the lead at Wembley through Dele Alli, with goals from Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera securing a deserved win for Jose Mourinho’s side, thus earning them a spot in the showpiece event next month.
Subsequently, there have been many disappointed and frustrated Spurs fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are wondering whether their side will indeed win a trophy under Pochettino, what with it now four seasons in a row without silverware under the Argentine.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Tottenham fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that United boss Mourinho is indeed willing to let forward Anthony Martial leave the club this summer.
And these recent reports should prompt Pochettino’s Spurs to make a summer move for the £58.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), as they seek further attacking reinforcements to take them to the next level next time round.
Ultimately, the 22-year-old has endured a testing time at Old Trafford, pretty much ever since Mourinho took over from Louis van Gaal as manager back in the summer of 2016.
Whereas the France international was a key component of van Gaal’s side in netting 17 goals in his first season in 2015/16, the forward has been a bit-part player under Mourinho, with just 17 Premier League appearances to show for his endeavours so far this term.
And after failing to appear for the Red Devils in the semi-final against Tottenham on Saturday, alongside recent reports that Mourinho would be willing to let him leave, it is looking more and more likely that Martial could be on his way out of Old Trafford this summer.
And Pochettino’s Spurs must take advantage.
Ultimately, the North Londoners were totally bereft of ideas in trying to get back into the game against United on Saturday, with Christian Eriksen the only attacker who looked menacing when on the ball in the second half.
And while Pochettino brought on the likes of Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela in the second period, Spurs simply didn’t have enough ideas and creativity about them to break down an organised and resolute United backline, with goalkeeper David De Gea not having a save to make.
Thus, it’s clear that, especially against the top sides on the big stages, Tottenham need something slightly different and someone who has produced the goods on the big stage before – Martial falls into both brackets.
The 22-year-old is full of pace and trickery and is willing to take defenders on to create an opportunity, and alongside having inspired United to FA Cup semi-final success against Everton at Wembley back in 2016, he has done it at the crucial times. And that could be invaluable for Spurs.
And with the North London outfit set for another season without a trophy, Pochettino must be looking to bring more big game-changers to the club this summer.
And with Mourinho reportedly ready to let Martial leave, Spurs must seek to lure the 22-year-old Frenchman to the capital during the close season.
