Tottenham supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side all but seal a place in the Premier League’s top four courtesy of a 2-1 victory at struggling Stoke City on Saturday.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their clash with the relegation-threatened Potters with an eight-point advantage over fifth place Chelsea, and having won each of their previous five league matches. And Spurs made it six on the spin on Saturday as goals from Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane either side of a Mame Biram Diouf equaliser secured a vital three points for Pochettino’s side, which coupled with Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with West Ham moved the North London outfit ten points clear with just six matches to go.
As such, there have been many delighted Tottenham fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are pretty sure that their side have done enough to seal a third consecutive season of Champions League football.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Manchester United scouted reported Tottenham target Alfie Mawson in Swansea’s 1-1 draw with West Brom last weekend.
And these recent reports simply must prompt Pochettino’s men to make a move for the £10.8 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) this summer, or else they risk missing out on the talented centre-back.
Ultimately, the 24-year-old defender has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the last 12 months or so, with the England Under-21 international becoming a regular in the Swansea side this time last year, and not relinquishing his grip on that spot since then.
In fact, Mawson has started all 32 of the Swans’ Premier League matches this term to underline his importance and indeed his influence on Carlos Carvalhal’s side, be it defending in his own box or indeed bagging crucial goals at the other, the latter something he did often 12 months ago.
And with Toby Alderweireld’s future at Tottenham far from certain heading into the summer, it appears that Pochettino is planning for life after the Belgium international, with Mawson the ideal long-term replacement for the 29-year-old.
Spurs have been excellent at the back in the last few seasons, and that has chiefly been down to the efforts of Alderweireld and compatriot Jan Vertonghen, who have arguably struck up the best central defensive partnership in the division in the last few years.
But times appear to be changing at the North London club. Davinson Sanchez has been outstanding since his summer arrival from Ajax, to the point that he has kept Alderweireld out of the side in recent times, and given he is just 21 years of age, he could dominate the heart of the Spurs backline for many years to come.
And Mawson could be his perfect partner.
Vertonghen remains a quality defender, but he’ll be 31 later this month and his contract is up next summer, so planning for the future by landing one of the Premier League’s best young defenders is exactly what the club need this summer.
But with United circling, Spurs need to make a move for the 24-year-old quickly if they are to avoid disappointment and ultimately land the Englishman this summer.
