Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been rejoicing at the news that manager Mauricio Pochettino has signed a new long-term deal with the North Londoners, keeping him at the club until 2023.
The former Southampton chief took over at Spurs back in 2014 and has since then turned them into regular top four contenders, with his side having achieved that feat in each of the last three seasons. And while the Argentine has been unable to end their lengthy trophy drought, there is optimism among our resident Tottenham fans that he is the man to bring silverware to the club in the coming years, and thus compete for major honours both domestically and in Europe.
Thus, there are many jubilant Spurs supporters in the Tavern at present, with the good news keeping on coming for the North London outfit based on recent comments from midfielder Victor Wanyama, who has played down speculation linking him with a move away.
And this will come as great news to our resident Tottenham fans, as there is little doubting that the Kenya international is a hugely influential midfielder likely to play a huge part next season.
Ultimately, the 26-year-old endured a testing campaign this time round in making just 18 Premier League appearances for Pochettino’s side, with a knee injury sustained against Chelsea back in August forcing him to miss the succeeding four months.
And while his return didn’t immediately see him regain his place in the Spurs eleven, four starts in their last five league matches underlines that Pochettino still sees him as a crucial part of the future of his team, and no wonder given his efforts last term alongside fellow influential ace Mousa Dembele.
The duo struck up one of the best central midfield partnerships in the division to help inspire Tottenham to second place in the 2016/17 season, the closest the club have come to winning the Premier League title in many a year.
And if Spurs are serious about challenging for major honours next season, not only do they need to bring in reinforcements over the summer, but they also must retain their best players as well – Wanyama is one of those.
So news that the Kenya captain seeks to remain at Spurs will be music to the ears of our resident Tottenham fans, in what has been a very good few days for their club.
