Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are relishing the rest of the summer transfer window following the news that manager Mauricio Pochettino has signed a new long-term deal with the North Londoners.
The ex-Southampton boss took over at Spurs back in 2014 and has since turned them into one of the best teams in the country, with this term’s third place finish their third successive top four effort. And although the Argentine has yet to lead the club to a trophy during his three-and-a-half-year stint in charge, many of our resident Tottenham fans are confident that he will be the man to do just that in the coming years.
But for that to happen, additions will be needed over the summer, which is why some of those Spurs fans at the bar are interested by recent reports linking Martin Skrtel with a move to Newcastle United.
And that’s because those reports and the possible deal emanating from them should trigger Pochettino’s side into a move for reported target Jamaal Lascelles, who is valued at £13.5 million by Transfermarkt.
Ultimately, the 24-year-old enjoyed a stellar year at the heart of Rafa Benitez’s backline, appearing in 33 of their 38 Premier League matches, missing the other five only as a result of injury.
Be it making crucial interceptions or last-ditch blocks in his own box to netting vital goals at the other end, the Englishman has excelled at Premier League level this season – he is perhaps a touch unfortunate not to be in or near the England squad for this summer’s World Cup.
And his authoritative nature as well as his evident footballing ability is sure to be of interest to Spurs chief Pochettino, who may see Lascelles as the ideal replacement for linked-away star Toby Alderweireld, who looks set to leave the club this summer.
Yes, in Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez, Spurs have a formidable centre back partnership, but at the tender age of 24 and having enjoyed a fine season this time round, Pochettino may see Lascelles as the perfect long-term partner for the latter.
And with Newcastle reportedly in the race for former Liverpool defender Skrtel, Tottenham may seek to seize the initiative and make a move for Lascelles, someone they have been linked with often in recent months.
And with the defender young and very much on the up, he’d no doubt benefit from Pochettino’s guidance, much in the same way compatriots Dele Alli, Eric Dier, and Harry Kane have during their time at Tottenham – ultimately, there aren’t many players who have got worse under the Argentine at Spurs.
Thus, these recent reports linking Newcastle with Skrtel could open the door for Tottenham to finally make their move for target Lascelles.
