Recent reports should trigger Tottenham to up the ante in race for £22.5m-rated sensation

Tottenham supporters have been making all the noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their team secure a top four finish in the Premier League courtesy of a 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Wednesday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their meeting with the North East heavyweights sat in fourth place and just two points clear of fifth place Chelsea, yet knowing that victory would take them above Liverpool into third. More significantly though, Harry Kane’s second half strike wasn’t just enough to move them above Jurgen Klopp’s team, but coupled with Chelsea drawing 1-1 at home with Huddersfield Town, it was also enough to seal a top four finish, Spurs’ third in succession.

Subsequently, there have been many thrilled and buoyant Tottenham fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are absolutely delighted to see their side secure a third straight season of Champions League football, a competition they hope they can perform even better in next time round.

In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that target Matthijs de Ligt is seeking a move away from Ajax this summer.

And these recent reports simply must trigger Pochettino’s side into upping the ante for the £22.5 million-rated sensation (as per Transfermarkt), as he appears to have all the traits to go on and become a top-quality centre back.

At just the tender age of 18, the five-time Netherlands international already has 62 first team appearances for the Dutch giants under his belt, including 33 this time round in the Eredivisie to help them to second place behind champions PSV Eindhoven.

And with just 33 goals conceded over the course of the league campaign, de Ligt certainly played a key part in helping Ajax to the best defensive record in the division, with the 18-year-old able to mix ability on the ball with capabilities off it as well, which is seemingly the barometer of the modern-day centre back.

But to have traits such as those at just 18 years of age suggests that the Dutchman is destined for big things in the game, which is why Tottenham simply have to get their man this summer.

Not only is the future of Toby Alderweireld uncertain heading into the close season, and thus the need for another centre back paramount, but under Pochettino’s guidance de Ligt could make the necessary improvements and thus develop into a world-class centre back.

The likes of Kane, Dele Alli, and Eric Dier, to name but a few, have all as young players been given the chance to shine by the Argentine, and are now regulars for both club and country – ultimately, Pochettino improves players, and aids the development of youngsters.

Add in how well former Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez has taken to English football this season after his summer move from the Dutch giants, and all the signs are pointing to de Ligt being able to become the player his potential suggests he can be were he to move to Spurs.

And with the 18-year-old reportedly seeking a move away this summer, Tottenham simply have to react and up the ante in the heavyweight race for the talented defender.
