Tottenham yet again are being linked with another player and he’s a defender. The problem is that he’s about to replace one of their best performers over this season however.
Taye Taiwo is the player on Harry Redknapp’s shortlist and he is looking to sign the Nigerian international in the January transfer window. Taiwo is a left back who can fill in as a centre back but primarily he plays on the outside.
Now many people are probably as puzzled as I am about this because Benoit Assou-Ekotto has played very well this year and he’s proved to be one of the best players that player his postion in the league.
So maybe Taiwo is better? Well no he’s not at all. He’s a good left back, probably for most premier leage teams in fact but I can only see this as a player ‘Arry wants as back up. Assou Ekotto’s relationship with Gareth Bale down the left flank has blossomed this season and his defensive capabilities have allowed the young Welshman to work his magic.
Taiwo helped Marseille to the Ligue One title last season and he will be coming into his prime soon as he is approaching 26-years old. I’m not doubting the players abilty as he was even named in the 2008 and 2009 team of the year in France against some other decent left backs such as Benoit Tremoulinas and Aly Cissokho.
I find this suprising to say the least that Tottenham are going all out to sign a player who won’t improve their current squad. Surely they want to progress and not strengthen their back up? This is on par with them wanting to sign Phil Neville.
