Tottenham supporters have been pretty quiet in the Transfer Tavern in recent times after seeing their team only muster a 1-1 draw with relegation-threatened Brighton in the Premier League on Tuesday night.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their clash at the AMEX Stadium off the back of a 3-1 defeat at the hands of newly-crowned champions Manchester City on Saturday, thus going in search of a response to just their sixth loss of the campaign. And although Harry Kane gave them the lead on the South Coast, Pascal Gross’ penalty not long after deservedly clinched a point for Chris Hughton’s side, a result which moves Spurs eight points clear of fifth-place Chelsea in the race for Champions League qualification.
Subsequently, there have been many frustrated Tottenham fans in the Tavern in the last few hours, with several disappointed that their side couldn’t get back to winning ways on Tuesday, and indeed completely shut the door on the race for a top four place.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that they scouted Porto right back Ricardo Pereira during their 1-0 win over Benfica on Sunday.
And while this reported interest in the 24-year-old is likely to be well received by Tottenham fans, it could spell bad news for £13.5 million-rated Spurs star Kieran Trippier (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, the England international has been a regular feature in Pochettino’s side this season with 21 Premier League appearances to his name thus far, as well as three starts en route to their last 16 Champions League exit at the hands of Juventus.
The 27-year-old and summer signing Serge Aurier have very much shared responsibilities at right back during this campaign, with Aurier playing more in the Champions League but Trippier in the Premier League, yet reported interest in another right back in Pereira is unlikely to thrill Trippier.
Ultimately, Pochettino felt the need to replace Man City-bound Kyle Walker during the summer with Aurier, perhaps suggesting that he didn’t feel Trippier was up to the task over the course of a campaign.
And for Spurs to reportedly express an interest in another right back could be another indication of Pochettino’s long-term concerns with Trippier, as the Tottenham chief certainly doesn’t need three accomplished right backs in his squad.
Yes, Pereira can also play further forward and has occasionally excelled as both a right wing back and a winger this season, but it’s unlikely that two of the aforementioned trio will play in the same team.
And with Aurier only arriving from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, it’s unlikely that Pochettino will look to get rid of him during the close season, even if he hasn’t always convinced for the North London club this term.
Thus, all signs would point to Pereira being a possible replacement for Trippier, thus spelling potentially bad news for the 27-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window.
