Tottenham Hotspur almost let a three-goal advantage slip against Wolverhampton Wanderers on the weekend.

Spurs were cruising after goals from Erik Lamela, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane handed them a comfortable three-goal lead at Molineux. However, the hosts didn’t go down without a fight with penalties from Ruben Neves and Raul Jimenez cutting their advantage to only one. Spurs managed to hold on to secure all three points in the five-goal thriller.

The result means Tottenham move above their north London rivals Arsenal into fourth, but Mauricio Pochettino will be far from pleased with his side’s defensive performance. After failing to sign a single player in the summer, the Argentine should be assessing potential January transfer targets. If Spurs want to keep pace with Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea – they must strengthen the squad.

One man who should be on his shortlist is Watford maestro – Roberto Pereyra. Valued at just £9m according to Transfermarkt, the Argentine has been a crucial player for Watford after joining the club from Juventus in 2016. His influence on the first-team has increased with every season, and the playmaker is flourishing under the guidance of Javi Gracia. With five goals in 11 Premier League appearances so far, Pochettino should aim to link up with his countryman in January.

The 27-year-old is known for his dribbling skills and ability to unlock defences with his fantastic range of passing. His arrival at the club would lessen the creative burden on the shoulders of Christian Eriksen and give Pochettino another quality option in the midfield. Now approaching the prime of his career, there is no better time to sign the Argentina international.

Under Pochettino’s tutelage, he could develop into a crucial player for the Lilywhites.
