Tottenham supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week following their side’s FA Cup exit last weekend, although many are looking forward to their return to Premier League action against Watford on Monday night.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men bowed out of the world’s oldest cup competition on Saturday courtesy of a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in the semi-finals, with goals from Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera seeing the Red Devils come from behind following Dele Alli’s early opener. Thus, the North Londoners suffered a second successive last four exit after falling to Chelsea 12 months earlier, which means that their wait for some silverware will go on another year.
Subsequently, there have been many disappointed Spurs supporters in the Tavern in the last few days, several of whom quickly turned their attentions back to league matters and indeed their side’s clash with Javi Gracia’s Watford at Wembley on Monday.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Tottenham fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Victor Wanyama, alongside three other stars, could be let go by Pochettino this summer.
And while the Kenya international’s possible departure is unlikely to be well received by Spurs supporters up and down the country, it would surely come as good news to £13.5 million-rated star Harry Winks (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, the 22-year-old has endured a testing few months in North London, this all after impressing in the early phase of the campaign to thus earn his senior England debut against Lithuania back in November.
And after a fine performance in a 1-0 win for Gareth Southgate’s men that day, things were looking up for the midfielder at the time and a World Cup place was certainly a possibility, but things just haven’t worked out for Winks since then.
Yes, injuries have held him back in his bid for regular football under Pochettino in recent times, but places on the substitute’s bench over the New Year suggested that Winks was indeed fit to play, but simply wasn’t going to dispose the likes of Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele from the starting line-up.
However, with Dembele one of the four that reportedly could leave this summer, as well as fellow midfielder Wanyama, the door could be open for Winks to stake a claim for a regular first team spot in Pochettino’s starting eleven.
Evidently, the Englishman has enormous potential but also supreme talent for the present, and alongside compatriot Dier in the middle of the park, he could continue his development and become the quality midfielder his potential suggests he could be.
But only regular football, even at the tender age of 22, will enable him to do just that, and with Wanyama one man possibly on his way out of Spurs this summer, the chance could be there for the England international.
Thus, while the Kenyan’s possible departure may disappoint Spurs fans, it is likely to come as good news to Winks in his bid to reclaim a first team place under Pochettino.
