Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to their team’s encounter with Premier League champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, with Spurs knowing that victory would move them eight points clear of the Blues in the race for Champions League qualification.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men sit fourth in the table having won 18 of their 30 league games this term, and they currently hold a five-point lead over the West London outfit with just eight matches of the season to go. And with an FA Cup semi-final to come against Manchester United next month, there are some very exciting times ahead for our resident Tottenham fans, and victory over Antonio Conte’s Chelsea on Sunday would put them firmly on course for yet another top four finish.
As such, there are many buoyant Spurs fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are hoping their side can continue their fine recent form of four wins in their last five Premier League matches by winning at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Tottenham supporters to discuss, not least recent comments from midfielder Mousa Dembele, in which he has cast doubt over his future at the North London outfit.
As such, Pochettino and the club’s hierarchy simply have to secure a new deal with the midfielder, in what would undoubtedly be the best business they can do this summer.
Ultimately, the 30-year-old has been absolutely brilliant ever since making the move to Spurs back in 2012, with the Belgium international going on to play 230 games for the North London club, netting ten goals and laying on 11 assists in that time.
Yet it is the influence he has on proceedings from the middle of the park, both on and off the ball, which comfortably makes him one of the best central midfielders in the Premier League, and arguably one of the most underrated.
The former Fulham star has the power and strength to both win the ball back in the middle and then fend off the opposition, while he is extremely comfortable on the ball both going forward and launching attacks, and indeed when under pressure in the middle of the park – he has everything required of a modern day midfielder.
His display against Juventus a few weeks ago in the first leg of their Champions League clash underlined exactly how impressive Dembele is the centre of midfield, and further emphasised that Spurs simply cannot afford to let him go this summer, or indeed at the end of his contract in 2019.
Yes, he may turn 31 in July and has suffered from injury problems in recent years, but there is little doubting that the Belgian star is one of Tottenham’s most important and influential players – he and Victor Wanyama struck up an outstanding partnership in their run to second place in the Premier League last season.
As such, securing an agreement with the 30-year-old is without doubt one of the best pieces of business chairman Daniel Levy and the club’s hierarchy can do this summer.
