Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the rest of the summer transfer window following the news that manager Mauricio Pochettino has penned a new deal.
The ex-Southampton boss took over at the North London outfit back in 2014 and has since led the club to three successive top four finishes in the Premier League, with a third place finish to show for their endeavours this time round. And while the Argentine has yet to deliver a trophy, thus failing to end their drought dating back to 2008, many of our resident Spurs fans reckon that he is the man to lead them to silverware in the coming years.
For that to happen though, signings will be needed at Tottenham during the summer, although one man who doesn’t look like joining the club is target Ryan Sessegnon, what with Fulham owner Shadid Khan stating that he is not for sale now they are in the Premier League.
Thus, with a move for Sessegnon unlikely, Pochettino’s side must now turn their attentions towards his £18 million-rated compatriot Ryan Bertrand (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, it is looking likely that left back Danny Rose will indeed leave the club this summer, what with his future having been hanging in the balance ever since he did an interview with The Sun last summer questioning and criticising Spurs’ transfer policy.
And with Manchester United thought to be keen, a move looks inevitable this summer, which would thus leave Ben Davies as the only left back at Tottenham.
And while the Wales international enjoyed a fine season last time round, some of our resident Spurs supporters are unsure about his capabilities on the big stage, and as such would relish serious competition in the form of Bertrand to really push Davies next time round.
28-year-old Bertrand has been a hugely consistent figure at Southampton ever since his initial loan move there from Chelsea back in 2014, from which he made it permanent a year later.
The England international has appeared 147 times for the Saints in the last few seasons and was certainly doing something right given he shot to the top of the England pecking order, although he has missed out on this summer’s World Cup to the surprise of many in the Tavern.
Yes, Bertrand perhaps wasn’t at his best in a poor Southampton team this season, but his consistently high-level performances over the years must be of interest to Pochettino, what with the 28-year-old just as adept in the natural full back position as he is playing wing back.
And having played and excelled in the Champions League final back in 2012, alongside several appearances in the Premier League over the years, the Englishman would also bring even more big-game experience to Pochettino’s Spurs team, a team that have on the whole struggled to perform at their best on the big stage.
And with a deal for Sessegnon seemingly out of the question, Pochettino must now turn his and the club’s attentions towards securing a deal for his compatriot Bertrand this summer.
