Mark Duffy, one of Sheffield United’s key men during their successful promotion push back to the Premier League, has been told he can find a new club after he was not offered a new deal (Football Insider).
He really came into his own last season as he made 36 appearances during their race for one of the top two places in the Championship, scoring six times and assisting seven more.
But with just one-year left on his current deal, the club have reportedly told him that he will not be given a new contract.
It has been a summer of change so far for Chris Wilder and his men at Bramall Lane as they have signed five new players, including breaking their transfer record twice – first on Luke Freeman, and then on Lys Mousset.
But Wilder is taking a risk if he lets Mark Duffy leave this summer.
As not only one of the most influential players on the pitch but also one of the more experienced players off it – having played over 400 professional games – Duffy could be a vital addition in the top flight.
And all these players which Wilder has signed so far – Mousset, Freeman, Callum Robinson, Phil Jagielka, Ravel Morrison – there is no guarantee that they will all hit the ground running and bed into the side straight away – particularly Morrison and Mousset who have already failed at other English clubs.
So, it’s important to have those key players who have brought you to where you are now in order to not only keep the spirit and morale high, but also to try and keep the style of play that was so successful last season.
Getting rid of Duffy has the potential to jeopardise that given how important he was in the last campaign.
