Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to their team’s FA Cup semi-final meeting with Manchester United on Saturday, as Spurs seek to take a step closer to ending their decade-long wait for some silverware.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men eased past AFC Wimbledon in round three but needed replays to get past both Newport County in round four and Rochdale in round five, thus setting up a last eight clash with fellow Premier League outfit Swansea City. And they put together their best performance of the competition at the Liberty Stadium to brush aside the Swans last month, thus setting up a semi-final encounter with Jose Mourinho’s United at Wembley on Saturday.
As such, there are many optimistic Tottenham fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their team can finally go on to win the FA Cup this season, in what would be their first major trophy since 2008, and their first in this competition since 1991.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Spurs fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that their club are willing to meet the £52 million asking price for Benfica winger Andrija Zivkovic.
And while landing the 21-year-old is likely to be well received by Tottenham supporters, Zivkovic’s possible arrival this summer could well force £22.5 million-rated ace Erik Lamela (as per Transfermarkt) out of the football club.
Ultimately, while manager Pochettino is likely building up his fitness after a year out with a hip problem, the 26-year-old is still struggling to command regular football at Spurs, with just five Premier League starts to his name this season.
And with the Argentina international failing to net in his 21 league appearances, and laying on just two assists in that time, he simply isn’t doing enough to warrant regular football, especially with the likes of Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min in fine form.
Add in January signing Lucas Moura, who has more often than not looked sharp when on the pitch for Tottenham, and things don’t look good for Lamela’s long-term prospects even now, let alone if they land 21-year-old sensation Zivkovic this summer.
Yes, reports suggest that Spurs are set to trigger a one-year extension in the 26-year-old’s contract, but it’s plausible that Lamela could be way down Pochettino’s pecking order come the start of next season, what with the North London outfit also linked with Demarai Gray and Richarlison in recent times – ultimately, he simply won’t play.
And reported interest in Zivkovic is further indication that the Spurs boss is eyeing further reinforcements to his attacking ranks, and landing the Serbia international this summer could well force Lamela out of the club during the close season.
