‘Sold in the summer’ – Tottenham fans on Twitter fearing the worst over lynchpin

The Spurs fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to the news that Toby Alderweireld wasn’t even named on the bench for yesterday’s 3-1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The Belgian defender has missed a large chunk of the season owing to injury but played 90 minutes for Belgium last week before missing out on being in the squad in yesterday’s London derby.

The Spurs fans propping our bar up have been left in the dark for the majority of the Alderweireld debacle but given there were no question marks over his fitness yesterday, the fans have come to the conclusion that they may have seen the last of their big Belgian in N17. Alderweireld joined Spurs from Atletico Madrid back in the summer of 2015 and since his arrival, the North London club have secured back-to-back seasons in the Champions League and recorded their highest ever Premier League finish when they came runners-up to Chelsea last year.

The dominant displays from the ex-Ajax man have gained Alderweireld a number of plaudits over the last few seasons and have made him one of the most sought-after centre-backs in the world. Contract issues have made Alderweireld a frustrated figure at Spurs as the player has reportedly been unable to come to an agreement with the club over wages on a new deal. The club has a strict wage structure in place that prevents a single player from earning more than £100,000 per week, leading to problems with Alderweireld as he feels his contribution is deserving of more.
