Spurs fans in the Transfer Tavern have been in good spirits over the course of the past couple of days, with their side having moved up to second in the Premier League and had the burden of Europa League football lifted from their shoulders, so the news that Toby Alderweireld is close to signing has been greeted with raucous cheers.
Indeed one punter donning his favourite Kane shirt has even broken into a jig by the jukebox with the Daily Mail reporting that this potential new contract will remove the pesky £25m release clause supposedly in the Belgian centre-back’s current terms.
It’s understood that this clause can be triggered in the summer of 2019 if Tottenham take the option they have to extend the defender’s stay by a further year to 2020, but the mooted new deal will remove this issue from the equation.
As well as this boost, should Alderweireld put pen to paper he will be committing himself to the club for five years, somewhat ending the speculation surrounding his future.
Spurs have already shown a proactive approach in terms of tying down key senior players, with Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Hugo Lloris, among others, all extending their terms.
