Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen is set to leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expires, according to a report from the Daily Mail.

It appears that an extension to the Belgian's current deal looks unlikely, meaning that he will become a free agent in the summer. The 32-year-old has been at Spurs since arriving from Ajax in 2012 and he has been a key player for them since then. Indeed, he has made a staggering 307 appearances for the club in all competitions in that time, scoring 13 goals (Transfermarkt).

However, recently under Jose Mourinho, Vertonghen's place in the team has come under threat. He has started just three of their last six matches in all competitions (Transfermarkt) and in their most recent outing against Southampton in the FA Cup he was taken off after just 54 minutes, which seemed to really deflate him and he looked on the verge of tears (The Sun).

It seems that most Spurs fans would be quite sad to see the central defender leave given just how well he has done for them over a number of years. However, they also accept that it is probably the right decision as they believe his performances haven't been at the level he has produced in previous years.

Here is what some had to say on Twitter...
