Spurs suffered their latest defensive blow at the weekend as Jan Vertonghen evidently suffered a serious injury to his ankle in their win over West Brom.
Indeed, whilst the extent of the injury is yet to be revealed by Mauricio Pochettino the Spurs manager has said that it does look “very bad,” (via Sky Sports.)
So, whilst things may recover miraculously for the Belgian defender there can be no doubt that the Lilywhites can just rest on their laurels in the transfer window with it open.
Spurs are undoubtedly title challengers this season with the way they are playing at the moment but at the heart of that is the relationship between Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld which is now under threat.
Without the pair, Spurs will undoubtedly be weaker and, looking at their back-up, they could do with another centre-half.
They’ve already had a warning shot when Alderweireld was injured earlier this season and their form looked patchy at times with the likes of Kevin Wimmer simply not good enough.
The club couldn’t do much about that with the window shut, though, so now they need to learn from that and get in another class centre-back for the rest of the season.
Indeed, with Spurs employing a back-three more and more the need for a new central defender has already become more urgent and, if Spurs want to continue challenging, they need to get these next couple of weeks right.
With Vertonghen Spurs could do with a new centre-back, without, though, they cannot do without another one – their title challenge rests on it.
