Tottenham Hotspur transfer news: Philippe Coutinho emerges as latest £77m target

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news: Philippe Coutinho emerges as latest £77m target - Tottenham

Philippe Coutinho has had a tough time since leaving Liverpool in 2018 and a move back to England could now be on the cards, according to the Daily Express.

Indeed, a £77m asking price has been placed on the player by his parent club Barcelona, with Tottenham reportedly interested along with Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City.

It is also believed that Bayern Munich, where the Brazilian is currently on loan, have an option to make his stay permanent for £102m, though the fact he has been dropped from the starting line-up recently indicates that the club may decide against activating that clause.

Spurs fans will be well aware of the midfielder after he scored a well-taken goal against them in the Champions League in December, but given the permanent signing of Giovani Lo Celso, it is difficult to see where Coutinho fits into Jose Mourinho’s team.

Added to that, the fee reported means the north London outfit would have to part with a significant amount of money for what would be the most expensive signing in their history. Spurs certainly have bigger priorities when it comes to strengthening the squad and that means money could perhaps be better spent elsewhere.

He is a talented player, being signed by Barcelona for £142m as well as gaining plaudits from Brazil legend Pele, who said the 27-year-old was “an excellent and intelligent” player, while a return of 12 goal contributions in 19 league games for Bayern Munich shows the danger he possesses.

Should Tottenham sign Philippe Coutinho?

Whether Mourinho is the man to get the best out of him remains to be seen, although Dele Alli’s eight-goal contributions in 13 league games under the Portuguese shows that the manager has worked well with one attacking midfielder at Tottenham.

Despite that, the signing of Coutinho, who was previously sought by Arsenal in summer 2019, would present too much of a risk. As well as an expensive fee, he would likely demand high wages that could disrupt the wage infrastructure at the club, and considering Alli and Lo Celso are currently in situ, it would be a waste to sign another player for that position.
