Reports suggest Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has set his sights on Souleymane Coulibaly as the 16 year old took the U17 FIFA World Cup by storm this summer in Mexico.
While Cote d’Ivoire bowed out in the Round of 16 stage of the tournament this year the Ivory Coast Football Federation can at least take one positive into account; Souleymane Coulibably looks the real deal.
In just four matches this summer, Coulibaly scored 9 goals to propel his team out of the group stage. While the U17 tournament is usually evidence of a players potential spark amidst expected errors at such a young age, Coulibaly stood out from the rest – showing pace, power, guile and finishing skills comparable to a Premier League striker.
Comparisons are inevitable – with The Mirror labelling him ‘The New Drogba’ . True enough, the goals he scored this summer showed the potential for a world class complete forward. He is very able with both feet and can score in seemingly every circumstance. 2 of his goal haul were outrageous narrowly angled shots, 1 was a true poachers goal and another was a spectacular overhead kick.
If Harry Redknapp were to secure Coulibaly’s signature, it would seem a risk-free move. The situation may be volatile, with plenty of accusations flying about across the globe when teams sign players who are under 18. Siena have just won promotion back to Serie A so selling Coulibaly might also be the last thing on their minds. Add to this the fact that earlier this week, on learning he was being scouted by Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid, he compared it to a 6 year old going to Disney Land.
It will be a tough job for Tottenham to secure the transfer of Souleymane Coulibaly – but it is well within their grasp and would surely be a wonderful signing for them.
