The door is very much open for Tottenham to land James Rodriguez, the ideal Eriksen replacement

According to a recent report from The Independent, Tottenham are one side to have been linked with a move for James Rodriguez. The Colombia international currently plays his football at Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich on loan from Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid, but struggles for regular game time under Niko Kovac has called his future at the Allianz Arena into doubt.

And reports suggest Real would ‘prefer’ the attacker to make the move to Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs over Unai Emery’s Arsenal, with the hope that that could aid the European champions’ endeavours to try and land Christian Eriksen from the North London club.

As such, the door is very much open for chairman Daniel Levy and the Tottenham hierarchy to land the Colombian, who could prove to be the ideal replacement for Eriksen in Pochettino’s side.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the future of Denmark international Eriksen has been subject of speculation for much of January given his contract situation at Tottenham, what with the 26-year-old’s current deal set to expire in the summer of 2020, and no new agreement as yet reached regarding an extension.

And Real Madrid are one side reportedly keeping tabs on that situation in the hope of luring Eriksen to the Bernabeu at some stage in the near future, especially given the Spanish giants are somewhat struggling in La Liga in third place in the table, a staggering ten points behind leaders Barcelona.

As such, Spurs could face quite a fight to keep hold of the Danish star come the summer, which is why the North Londoners should show huge intrigue in trying to lure Rodriguez away from Real, as doing so would equip Pochettino with an ideal replacement for 26-year-old Eriksen.

Ultimately, while this term has been something of a struggle for Rodriguez, the 27-year-old has been a revelation ever since bursting onto the scene at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, a tournament in which he won the Golden Boot to thus earn a move to Real Madrid.

And with 36 goals and 40 assists in 111 appearances for the La Liga heavyweights, the Colombian ace has certainly proven his worth to the Spanish outfit over the years, not least in his debut season at the Bernabeu in netting 13 goals and laying on 13 assists in just 29 league games.

And while he was shipped out on loan to Bayern at the start of last season, Rodriguez has continued to deliver with eight goals and 14 assists for Carlo Ancelotti’s side last time round in their run to yet another Bundesliga title – yes, this term has been difficult, with injuries not helping his cause, but there is clearly a supremely talented attacker in the 27-year-old.

And with a great eye for a pass as well as incredible vision in the final third, the former Monaco star appears to be exactly what Tottenham need in the attacking ranks post-Eriksen, a scenario which does seem to be getting increasingly likely.

And with Real Madrid reportedly preferring Rodriguez to move to Spurs to aid them with their pursuit of Eriksen, the door is very much open for Levy and the Tottenham hierarchy to lure the ideal replacement for the Dane to North London.
