According to a recent report from Yahoo Sport UK, Tottenham will entertain the possibility of selling defender Toby Alderweireld this summer. The pursuit of the 29-year-old had gone a bit quiet in recent weeks given the £75 million price-tag on the centre back, but reports suggest that Mauricio Pochettino’s men remain ‘open’ to the idea of cashing on the influential ace this summer.

Thus, the North Londoners are likely to be on the lookout for a replacement for the 29-year-old, with Matthjis de Ligt one man linked with the club, but Pochettino already has his perfect Alderweireld replacement at the club in the form of Davinson Sanchez.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, there is no doubt that Tottenham will miss Alderweireld’s qualities and leadership were he to indeed move on this summer, as the Belgium international has comfortably been one of the best defenders in the Premier League in the last few years.

However, Spurs managed pretty well without the 29-year-old for much of last season following his injury against Real Madrid in the Champions League back in November, and they did so mainly as a result of the form showed by 22-year-old Sanchez.

The Colombia international only made the move to Tottenham in the summer of last year after impressing in a one-season spell at Dutch giants Ajax, and while there were some concerns that he might struggle to adapt to English football, he proved those doubters wrong with a stunning season at the heart of the Spurs backline.

The 22-year-old started all eight of their Champions League matches en route to their last 16 defeat to Juventus while he only missed five of their Premier League games following his late summer arrival, thus underlining how big an impact he has had on things at Tottenham.

And having formed a wonderful partnership with Belgian ace Jan Vertonghen in the heart of the Spurs backline, there doesn’t appear to be any need to replace Alderweireld with a signing this summer, as Sanchez has already gone some way to doing just that.

And while some may argue that the centre back ranks aren’t overly strong outside of that duo, Eric Dier is more than capable of playing in that role as is 20-year-old Juan Foyth – and given how much it is likely to cost Spurs to land 18-year-old de Ligt, it’s money they could spend on more pressing matters in other areas of the squad.

Thus, Pochettino’s side should forget about de Ligt, as the perfect Alderweireld replacement is already at the club in the form of Colombian ace Sanchez.
