According to a report from The Daily Telegraph, Stoke City winger Xherdan Shaqiri is moving ever closer to a move away from the bet365 Stadium. The Switzerland international enjoyed his best season in a Potters shirt last time round but it wasn’t enough to keep the club in the top-flight, from which interest has mounted with Liverpool reportedly leading the chase for the 26-year-old.

And with the Reds reportedly in talks over a possible move, the time to act is now for Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham, with it surely the last chance they have to seal a deal for the 26-year-old winger.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, while Spurs deserve great credit for securing a third successive top four finish in the Premier League last season, many still feel that the squad is lacking in sufficient quality and depth to sustain a title challenge, and indeed consistently compete for major honours.

And that appears none-more-so evident than in the attacking ranks, as outside of the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, and Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura and specifically Erik Lamela simply didn’t do the business last season.

Granted, Moura only made the move to Tottenham in the winter and as such deserves time to adapt to the division, but Argentina international Lamela failed to convince of his abilities post-injury last term, taking until the final game of the season to net his first goals of the campaign.

And while Shaqiri is arguably just as inconsistent as the Spurs winger, the 26-year-old will head into the 2018/19 campaign full of confidence after his best season to date for Stoke last time round, in which he netted eight goals and laid on seven assists in the Premier League.

And while he does have a tendency to go missing in games, he is able to conjure something up out of very little and thus produce a moment of magic, which is something that would seriously bolster a Tottenham team that, at times in the big matches last season, looked somewhat bereft of ideas going forward.

But with Liverpool reportedly having opened negotiations with Stoke regarding Shaqiri’s signature, the time to act is now for Pochettino’s men in their bid to land the £16.2 million-rated Lamela upgrade (as per Transfermarkt).
