£50m for Michael Keane? In a summer where Tottenham look to prepare for a title bid, that signing certainly wouldn’t have Spurs fans optimistic of their first trophy since 2008.

The Daily Mail have claimed Arsenal and Spurs are battling it out for the Everton centre-back’s signature, but why on earth would Spurs even bother testing the water, never mind ‘locking horns’? He’s a good centre-back, but there’s plenty more as good, or better, for much cheaper.

Spurs have to invest in summer, but they have to invest in the right areas on the right players, and that goes without saying. They could spend millions of that fee on a better player in a different position and pick a centre-back up for much less. We all know Daniel Levy isn’t one to splash the cash, they shouldn't waste what he is willing to spend on Keane.

He’s played 29 times this season, and, just like the whole Everton team, he’s been hit and miss. In that respect, he’s still yet to pay back the £25m fee the Toffees paid to Burnley for him in June 2017. His current market value is £22m, according to Transfermarkt, and that says all you need to know about Everton’s valuation.

Madness.

Mauricio Pochettino needs to bring in proven Champions League-quality talent. Players who have been playing at the highest level for the last few years and are ready to take the challenge of winning the Premier League trophy. Keane would be a step sideways, and although he’s a solid defender, he’s just not what the club needs.

The Spurs faithful expect big things from this transfer window and if they get what they want, the new stadium will be rocking next season.

If it’s a disappointment, the board will feel the pressure from the stands.
