Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are relishing their team’s clash with Premier League champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, as victory for Spurs would move them eight points clear of their London rivals in the race for a top four spot.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men sit fourth in the table having picked up 18 wins from their 30 league games this season, and they currently have a five-point lead over the West London outfit with just eight matches of the season to go. And with an FA Cup semi-final to come against Manchester United next month, there is much optimism among our resident Spurs fans, and three points against Antonio Conte’s Chelsea this weekend would put them firmly on course for a third successive top four finish.
As such, there are many buoyant Tottenham fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are hoping their team can continue their fine recent run by picking up all three points at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and thus take a huge step closer to Champions League football next season.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Spurs supporters to discuss, not least recent reports suggesting that Watford may need to sell target Abdoulaye Doucoure in the summer.
Ultimately, 25-year-old Doucoure has enjoyed a fine second season in English football at Vicarage Road, with the former France youth international scoring seven goals and laying on three assists in 30 Premier League games for Javi Gracia’s side, thus helping them to 11th place in the division.
It’s not just his contributions though that have impressed many a football fan this term, it’s his incredible work-ethic, defensive abilities, and capabilities both on and off the ball which have been lauded by many, to the point that several top Premier League sides are keeping tabs on his progress.
Arguably, Doucoure isn’t as good on the ball as Dembele is, but the Watford man certainly has a similar sort of ability off the ball as the 30-year-old Belgian, whom many feel is one of the most underrated players in the Premier League.
Ultimately, Dembele has just a year left on his current Tottenham contract, and while he continues to impress and prove his worth to Pochettino’s side, he will turn 31 in July, and as such time may be approaching to find his replacement, no matter how difficult that may be.
But Doucoure certainly ticks most of the boxes in terms of coming in and replacing the Belgium international, which is why Spurs simply must fend off the competition to land the 25-year-old over the summer.
