Tottenham supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern throughout this week after seeing their team move two games away from the FA Cup title courtesy of a routine 3-0 success over Swansea City on Saturday.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men needed replays against both Newport County and Rochdale in the preceding rounds of the world’s oldest club competition to reach the quarter-final stage, but there were no such problems for the North London outfit in South Wales on Saturday. A Christian Eriksen brace alongside Erik Lamela’s second of the campaign secured an easy victory for Spurs over their Premier League rivals, thus setting up a mouth-watering last four clash with Manchester United next month.
Subsequently, there have been many delighted Tottenham fans in the Tavern this week, several of whom are hoping their team can indeed go all the way in the competition this season, and thus finally end a decade-long wait for silverware.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a move for West Brom defender Jonny Evans this summer.
And while it may not appear to be the most glamorous or indeed ambitious of signings, the £13.5 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) could well be the perfect replacement for Toby Alderweireld, who looks set to leave the club in the summer.
Ultimately, 29-year-old Alderweireld has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League during his time at Tottenham, very much playing his part in helping Pochettino’s men to the best defensive records in each of the last two league campaigns.
Alongside Jan Vertonghen, the Belgian duo have established arguably the best central defensive partnership in the division, yet injuries have restricted Alderweireld in the last 12 months or so, and it’s fair to say that Spurs haven’t missed him greatly since the arrival of Davinson Sanchez during the summer.
Yet Evans continues to prove his worth as a top-flight defender, and while he is playing in a West Brom team that are almost certainly going down this season, it’s worth remembering that both Arsenal and Manchester City tried to sign the 30-year-old during the January window – that underlines just how good he is.
Yes, Alderweireld is arguably of a higher level than Evans, but the Northern Irishman would compensate for the Belgian’s departure by bringing genuine quality and indeed a wealth of experience, trophy-winning experience specifically, to this Spurs team.
The former Manchester United defender won three Premier League titles during his stint at Old Trafford and clinched two League Cup crowns as well, and as such would bring a significant amount to a Tottenham side that are limited when it comes to trophy-winning experience in English football.
And with 232 Premier League appearances in his career, it’s not as if they would be bringing an untried and untested defender to the club for a paltry £3 million (for what it’s worth, Alderweireld has 104 top-flight appearances to his name).
As such, while losing Alderweireld would be a huge loss to Spurs this summer, Evans’ arrival would compensate for much of that, and for just £3 million, it’s an absolute bargain.
