Tottenham have a lot of business to do in summer, but perhaps none more important than tying Toby Alderweireld to a new contract. If Daniel Levy can pull it off, Spurs fans will really believe they can reach the very top in their new stadium.

Football Insider believe the club are ready to re-open contract talks after the Belgian continued to boss the Lilywhites’ defence this season. He’s seen as one of the best centre-backs in the world, and it’s clear they need him to carry out their plans for dominance.

He’s got a £25m release clause in his contract at the moment, and that’s dangerous. He’d be a bargain, and more proven outfits might tempt him if the club leave their approach until the summer. A new deal without that clause would be a massive relief.

Spurs have shown they already have the quality to beat the best teams in Europe on their day, and they’ll hope to strengthen their squad in summer. The last thing they need is their leader jumping ship when it seems to be sailing in the right direction.

The fans would be delighted with him signing an extension, of course, and that’ll halt to fear that their best players will leave in summer, one by one. It’s important this feeling of excitement remains within the fanbase or the old Spurs mentality will creep back in.

Keeping Alderweireld would boost the fans’ faith in Daniel Levy and demonstrate their intent to build a squad capable of English and European domination for years to come. Over to you, Levy!
