Tottenham supporters have been in fine voice in recent times after seeing their side record a third consecutive Premier League victory at the weekend.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their clash with struggling Cardiff City off the back of beating Brighton and Huddersfield Town in their preceding two league games, yet having suffered a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Barcelona in the Champions League in midweek. Yet Spurs responded with a narrow 1-0 success over Neil Warnock’s Bluebirds on Saturday, with Eric Dier bagging the all-important winner after just eight minutes to move Pochettino’s side to within two points of top spot.

Thus, there have been many thrilled Tottenham fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom have taken to Twitter to praise the efforts of defender Toby Alderweireld, with some calling for the club to give him a new contract, what with his current one set to expire at the end of this season.

And after another commanding display in the heart of the Spurs backline on Saturday, alongside many years of producing the goods for the North London club, those Tottenham fans are spot on to suggest that the £36 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) is certainly worthy of the key agreement.

Ultimately, the 29-year-old has proven to be one of the best centre backs in the English top-flight since his move to Southampton back in 2014, to the point that Pochettino sought to bring the Belgium international with him to Spurs when he was appointed manager back in 2015.

And that has turned out to be a very inspired decision as Alderweireld has played a vital part in their success under the Argentine, helping them to the best defensive record in the Premier League in both 2015/16 and indeed 2016/17, the latter of which seeing them finish runners-up to champions Chelsea.

And while the 29-year-old wasn’t the only reason for those two brilliant seasons at the back, what with the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Danny Rose, Kyle Walker, and Hugo Lloris, among others, also playing their part, there is little doubting the influence he had on that backline - there’s a reason he has been touted for a move away in the last 12 months or so.

Yes, Spurs deserve credit for keeping hold of Alderweireld beyond the August 31 deadline earlier this year, but given his current contract status, they are just prolonging the inevitable, with the 29-year-old set to leave for nothing come the end of the season.

But Tottenham cannot be in the business of selling their best players, and while he wasn’t as influential last term as he has previously been, Alderweireld has again showed his class this time round in forcing his way back in Pochettino’s starting eleven, and indeed further underlining his status as one of the best defenders in the division - he’s a player they can ill-afford to lose.

But with losing him becoming more and more likely as the season progresses, those Spurs fans calling for the club to give him the contract he deserves are absolutely spot on, as a Tottenham team with Alderweireld in it is certainly stronger than one without him.
