Tottenham fans happy to see Alderweireld remain at club beyond English deadline

Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the start of the 2018/19 Premier League season, which for their side gets underway in the North East on Sunday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men deserve great credit for securing a third successive top four finish in the English top-flight last time round, backing up their second place finish the season before. Yet the North Londoners finished a hefty 23 points adrift of champions Manchester City to suggest that a title challenge still remains a way away, although some big additions over the summer would have no doubt helped in their quest to bridge the gap to the Citizens.

However, as it happens, there were no incomings at Spurs, although just as important was that there were no outgoings as well, which means that defender Toby Alderweireld, subject of interest from Manchester United, remained a Tottenham player beyond the English deadline.

The 29-year-old has been repeatedly linked with a move away from the club given his current contract situation, what with the centre back out of contract in 12 months’ time, and while the option is there to trigger a one-year extension, it would bring a lowly £25 million release clause into play.

As such, Jose Mourinho’s United were reportedly keen on luring the Belgium international to Old Trafford in a bid to solve their own defensive vulnerabilities, yet reports on Deadline Day suggested that the Red Devils didn’t actually make a bid for the centre back, with just ‘one conversation’ reportedly held between Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and United’s Ed Woodward.

And news that Alderweireld is set to stay at Tottenham, for the meantime at least, has prompted much delight among plenty of Spurs fans on Twitter…
