Danny Rose has been left out of the Tottenham Hotspur starting 11 recently following transfer talks with new manager Jose Mourinho, according to their former defender Alan Hutton.
The England international was a regular under Mauricio Pochettino and had started nine of Spurs’ 12 Premier League matches this season whilst the Argentine was in charge (Transfermarkt).
However, since the arrival of Mourinho he has lost his place in the team and hasn’t started any of the three league fixtures under the Portuguese (Transfermarkt).
When discussing why Rose may have been left out of the starting 11 of late, Hutton suggested that it could be because he has held talks with Mourinho and told him that he intends to leave at the end of his contract.
Speaking to Football Insider, the ex-Scotland international said: “He [Rose] has come out and said he’s going to run his contract down.
“I’m sure Mourinho’s had a chat with him, just as he did with Eriksen, to see where his head’s at. Maybe that conversation came out with: ‘I’m running my contract down and I want to leave.’
“If that has been said, maybe Mourinho’s said: ‘Well that’s it, you’re not really going to play.’ I found it a bit strange Vertonghen played there and Rose was on the bench. When I first saw it I thought is he injured as well?
“I wonder if there’s been conversations had and they’ve decided to try another option.”
Hutton is probably right here. Rose has publicly stated in the past that he intends to run his contract down before leaving in the summer of 2021 (Sky Sports).
If he has said the same thing to Mourinho, then that probably explains why centre-back Jan Vertonghen has been selected to play at left-back recently ahead of the England international.
The Portuguese manager is doing a similar thing with Christian Eriksen who has also expressed his desire to leave (The Guardian) and it makes sense as from his point of view he wants players on the pitch who actually want to be at the club.
