Pundit and former Tottenham Hotspur player Alan Hutton has told Football Insider that Kristoffer Ajer’s potential move to the north London club would be a ‘huge jump’ for the central defender.
Hutton was speaking after the Celtic man was linked with a move to Spurs in the summer transfer window, and he believes that the step up from the Scottish Premiership to the Premier League would be a huge one for Ajer.
This is what the former Scottish right-back had to say about the 21 year-old:
“Oof, that’s a massive step up. That’s a huge jump. I don’t know him personally, I don’t know him or his personality but what I do know is he’s been a solid player for Celtic.
“Whether, look, I always think when agents are talking too much, a lot comes from the agent, there’s a lot of chat put in the press to try and rustle something up.
“On the flipside we know Tottenham’s problems and where they’re lacking. It wouldn’t surprise me if they’re looking at a lot of options for the defensive side of it.”
Ajer would not be the only player to make the jump from Celtic to the Premier League. Kieran Tierney joined Arsenal in the summer from the Glasgow giants, and Virgil Van Dijk moved from the Scottish champions to Southampton before then moving on to Liverpool.
The Norwegian international has made a total of 49 appearances in all competitions for Celtic this season, scoring four goals and providing two assists. In total he has 129 appearances for the Hoops, scoring five goals and providing three assists according to Transfermarkt.
Whether Ajer would improve Tottenham’s defence is another question, but Hutton thinks he has been ‘solid’ for Celtic.
Spurs have conceded 41 goals in just 26 matches in all competitions under Jose Mourinho this season (via Transfermarkt), so the Portuguese coach may look for defensive reinforcements in the summer to improve his record, and Ajer could be the answer.
