Writing for football.london, Alasdair Gold has confirmed that Spurs and Jose Mourinho will not be able to call upon summer signing Matt Doherty for their Carabao Cup semi-final clash against Brentford on Tuesday evening – coming as a blow for the defender who was sent off in the club’s first match of 2021.
Blow for Doherty
Doherty, who would have arguably been looking forward to Spurs’ crunch encounter with the Championship high-flyers, especially given the Lilywhites’ crucial hunt for silverware, will not feature as this news is confirmed.
The Irishman was given his marching orders after receiving two yellow cards against Leeds United, with the right-back’s late dismissal arguably the low point in a resounding 3-0 victory for Spurs.
Carabao Cup clash awaits
The Bees present a different challenge for Spurs as they seek to clinch their first trophy since 2008, coincidentally in the same competition, with Premier League sides Southampton, West Brom, Fulham and Newcastle all succumbing to unexpected defeats at the hands of Thomas Frank’s plucky underdogs.
They’re not to be underestimated, as evident by their impressive cup run so far, and Mourinho will be hoping to make the most of his available options.
As well as Doherty, Tottenham will also be without Giovani Lo Celso – who is still out through injury.
Mourinho will have a dilemma in his potential team selection, and Lilywhites will be hoping he gets it right.
