Football London journalist Alasdair Gold has admitted that he doesn’t think Jadon Sancho will sign for Tottenham Hotspur as he would cost too much money.
The England international currently plays for Borussia Dortmund having joined them from Manchester City in 2017 and it is fair to say that he has excelled in Germany. This season alone he has managed to score 15 goals and provide 17 assists in just 29 appearances in all competitions (Transfermarkt).
However, according to German reporter Jesco von Eichmann, the 19-year-old will be leaving the Bundesliga outfit in the summer, although Dortmund will demand £100m for him before allowing him to go (Sky Sports). According to Gold, the size of their asking price will mean that Tottenham aren’t likely to be in contention when it comes to trying to secure his signature at the end of the season.
When asked whether Spurs would try and sign the forward in the summer in a Q&A via Football London, Gold said: “Sancho will be out of Tottenham’s price range. You’re looking at a £100million plus player now in the talented young England international.”
It is hard to disagree with Gold on this one. Spurs and their owner Daniel Levy tend to be quite cautious when it comes to spending their money and it is therefore hard to see them spending such a sum on the England star.
Indeed, this is a club who went through the whole of the 2018/19 campaign without signing a single player (Transfermarkt) and the fee Dortmund want for Sancho is just less than double what they paid for Tanguy Ndombele (BBC Sport), who is their current record signing.
Added to that, it is also unlikely that Jose Mourinho would target forward players in the next transfer window anyway. They are well-stocked in attack with the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela and new signing Steven Bergwijn already in their squad.
You would expect that any money they do spend will either be in defence, especially if Jan Vertonghen leaves at the end of his contract, or in midfield.
