Tottenham Hotspur: Danny Mills questions Lucas Moura’s consistency

Tottenham Hotspur: Danny Mills questions Lucas Moura’s consistency - Tottenham

Former England right-back Danny Mills has questioned the consistency of Tottenham Hotspur forward Lucas Moura’s performances for the club.

Indeed, the Brazilian joined from Paris Saint Germain in January 2018 for a fee of £23 million according to BBC Sport and, during his time in north London he has certainly provided some memorable moments, none more so than when he netted a second-half hat-trick against Ajax in the Champions League semi-final in 2019 which ultimately sent Spurs to the final. However, Mills believes that Lucas doesn’t produce that kind of performance regularly enough and as a result has been left questioning whether or not the 27-year-old is even good enough to play for Tottenham.

Speaking about the Brazilian international, Mills told Football Insider: “Moura’s been there a while now. Has he been good enough on a consistent level on that right hand side? Is he good enough full stop? I don’t know, the jury is still out on that one.

“I know he’s had some fantastic performances, but they’ve been quite few and far between.”

Mills certainly has a point here and whilst Lucas clearly has lots of talent, he doesn’t show it anywhere near often enough.

Interestingly, so far in his Spurs career, the former Sao Paulo man has scored just 22 times and has provided nine assists in 91 appearances in all competitions (Transfermarkt), meaning he averages a goal involvement just under every three games. Compare that to their other winger Son Heung-min and it shows just how inconsistent Lucas is. Indeed the South Korean has scored 80 goals and has 45 assists in 218 appearances (Transfermarkt), meaning he averages a goal involvement every 1.7 games.

Was dropping Lucas Moura for the Champions League final Pochettino's biggest mistake?

Going forward, Lucas needs to produce on a much more regular basis especially as Tottenham have now signed Steven Bergwijn. As it stands, he is perhaps more likely to keep his place due to the injury to Harry Kane but when the England captain returns, he could lose his spot in the starting line-up to Bergwijn who scored on his debut against Manchester City.

Spurs fans, do you think that Lucas Moura needs to up his levels of consistency? Let us know in the comments below…
