Tottenham Hotspur: Darren Bent impressed with impact Jose Mourinho has had on Dele Alli

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent believes that Dele Alli is rediscovering his best form and that the arrival of Jose Mourinho has played a part in that.

The England international was outstanding in what was Mourinho’s first game in charge on Saturday, helping Spurs beat rivals West Ham 3-2 at the London Stadium.

Will Dele Alli rediscover his best form this season?

No

Alli has faced some criticism for his recent performances, most notably from pundit Roy Keane (Sporting Life).

But Bent believes that he has already upped his game under the Mourinho regime and was impressed with how he played on Saturday.

When discussing Alli’s performance against West Ham, Bent told Football Insider: “He looks like he is getting back to his best, the flick for one of the goals was tremendous.

“There’s that quote that he [Mourinho] went up to Dele Alli and asked if ‘he was Alli’s brother and Alli was like no I’m Dele Alli, what are you talking about? Play like him then.’

“I don’t know how true that is but at the same time it looks like Mourinho has gone up to him said ‘I know how good you are, I’ve seen how good you are when against my teams and what I want you to get back to that and play with no pressure’

“It looked like he played with a freedom yesterday and he thought I’m going to show this manager ‘I am good player, I’ve had a lean spell but I’m going to turn it around’ and he did look like he was getting back to his best yesterday.”

There is no doubting that Alli produced an excellent display against the Hammers and was much better than he has been for a while.

The ex-MK Dons man had a confident swagger about him once again, as shown by the cheeky piece of skill he produced in the build up to Spurs’ second goal of the afternoon (@btsportfootball).

His stats from the game were impressive, he provided an assist, played a total of two key passes, completed two successful tackles, one successful dribble and finished with a WhoScored rating of 7.54.

At just 23-years-old, there is still plenty of time for Alli to fulfil his undoubted potential, and it may just be that Mourinho is the man to get the best out of the midfielder.
