Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent has criticised the performance of centre-back Davinson Sanchez in Spurs’ 2-1 defeat against Manchester United.
The Colombian has been a regular in the team of late, starting in the last seven Premier League fixtures and playing the full 90 minutes against the Red Devils (Transfermarkt).
However, Bent was not impressed with the display of the 23-year-old and suggested that it was perhaps as poor as he has performed for the north London club.
Speaking to Football Insider, the ex-England striker said: “Davinson Sanchez, that’s probably the worst I’ve seen him play, he didn’t look great to me.
“He is only young and he will get better. It was tough for him against Manchester United and that whole back five – including the goalkeeper – I think Mourinho will change it all up, or at least try to, in January.
“Maybe sign a centre-half, maybe a full-back.”
When you look at the statistics from the game, they do suggest that Sanchez wasn’t at his best at Old Trafford.
Indeed, the former Ajax man gave the ball away 13 times in the 90 minutes, whilst only four of his attempted long balls were accurate (SofaScore).
Added to that, he was also directly at fault for United’s first goal of the evening, losing his battle with Marcus Rashford before the England international fired past Paulo Gazzaniga (Sky Sports).
As Bent says, Sanchez is still only young and can improve with time under Jose Mourinho. But the fact that Spurs have shipped eight goals in their last four games in all competitions is surely a worry (Transfermarkt).
The Portuguese could well look to add another centre-back in January to give players like Sanchez more competition, or even someone with leadership qualities to help the Colombian on the pitch.
